Functional Medicine is a Viable Option in Treating and Preventing Sports Injuries

Common sports-related injuries affect almost 2 million people annually. Playing sports may cause sprained ankles, muscle strains, shin splints, and knee, head, or neck injuries, among others. Athletes often complain of chronic pain from these injuries, too. At worst, traumatic impacts on the head may lead to brain injury and death. 

When you have sports injuries, your first impulse is often going to to the clinic and getting treated for your condition as quickly as possible. Functional medicine doctors, however, do not offer instant treatments. Their goal is to understand how the injuries came about and how to heal them by treating the root causes, which are often neurodegenerative or metabolic.
